The low back pain is a subject that comes up very often and about which I am asked many questions! “My back hurts, what sport to do” “I have pain in my lower back I have to stop following your programs …”

The different types, the duration, the treatments, the causes… If I myself have already had back problems, I have also been called upon to advise many people who suffered from “back problems”.

According to the site ameli.fr, at least 80% of people will suffer from low back pain in their life. It’s just huge!

But I reassure you, if the common low back pain accounts for 90% of cases, you will be relieved in less than 4-6 months (and often in less than 7 days) 9 times out of 10. So before you worry and search for “low back pain and cancer” on a medical site, take a breath and read this article!

What is common low back pain?

When you have a strong pain in the lower back, specifically on the vertebrae in the lumbar region, then you can call it low back pain.

This disease is often called “common” because it is the most widespread.

The 5 lumbar vertebrae lie between the thoracic vertebrae and the sacrum.

They are called the L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5 vertebrae and they are linked by intervertebral discs.

How long does low back pain last?

The duration of a common low back pain is a few days.

The duration of a common low back pain is a few days.

If it persists, then the name changes and it is no longer said to be “common”.

Type of low back pain Duration of pain
Commune A few days
Acute Up to 6 weeks
Subacute Up to 12 weeks
Chronic Beyond 12 weeks
Recurrent More or less regular peak pain

Do I have low back pain? Well, it will depend on several symptoms. Do you feel diffuse and localized pain in the lower back? After a sudden movement or after lifting a heavy load? So it is highly possible that it is low back pain.

In some cases, one can even feel pain in one or both legs due to the compression of the sciatic nerve. And the difficulty of movement can be very diverse! If the movement limitation is important, we will rather speak of acute back pain.

Obviously, if you have any doubts, atypical pain that seems worrying to you, you can make an appointment with a specialist. But first, you can try some back pain stretches to see if it relieves you.

What are the other types?

As we have seen, several types of low back pain exist, there are 4 others which are very well known and which come back regularly: acute, chronic, recurrent, inflammatory.

I will go into them in detail, because knowing your pain means making the right decisions to heal as effectively as possible.

Low back pain also named lumbago or lumbago is really problematic in everyday life. It impacts our movements, our morale, our life! To prevent it and reduce the pain, effective treatments exist.

Anti back pain program

Physical activity the real cure

Doctors are pushing their patients to get moving, and Medicare is campaigning for it nationally. Sports activity and movement, this is the best way to protect and heal yourself. For many, pain = medicine, and if this is the easy way, it is reckless not to rely solely on medicine, especially for the back! If there are some grandmother’s remedies for the back, they should only be one more to give you relief.

Most of the time, muscle aches are advertised as “mechanical”. So it is rather a fundamental problem that must be resolved. A few minutes of exercise a day can reduce your risk of low back pain very quickly.

Bodybuilding or strengthening, I really advise you to work your muscles to stimulate them regularly. With or without weight, the goal is to get out of your comfort zone and your sedentary lifestyle.

Muscles are needed, ok, but so does stretching! Stretching will allow you to gain flexibility and put the spine in motion. These stretches also help relieve pain, increase resistance to pain, and feel better.

Drugs and over-medication

As I was telling you, drugs are not necessarily bad on their own. But today, some are without a prescription and the side effects are not always well advertised.

However, when you have regular pain in the lower back at lumbar level, over-medication can have the opposite effect and worsen in the long run.

We have more and more pain, so we consume more and more until the risk of drug misuse. And above all without working on the root of the problem: namely a lack of bodybuilding, movement, stretching.

It is true that the “speed” of the painkiller makes you dream, when you are in pain. But you have to know how to ask yourself two questions: “why did I have low back pain?” and “what can I do to stop having some?”

Regarding medication, I may not teach you anything, but there are also negative effects:

  • Paracetamol: toxic to the liver in large doses
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: digestive disorders, heartburn
  • Level 2 & 3 opioid analgesics: drowsiness, nausea, vomiting at the start of treatment

So be careful with self-medication, you are a patient and not always well informed! The real treatment for low back pain is movement!

Heat to relax your muscles

We can often have the reflex to use the warm to relieve lower back pain. And this is a good thing ! Why ? Because the pain is related to tight muscles, and the heat will relax them. In addition, it has a blocking action on sensory pain receptors (nociceptors).

The heat improves the rate of action of the metabolism and may promote faster healing with improved blood circulation to the area.

Also think about massages on the painful area, whether it is for pain in the upper back, lower or middle, it is effective. Here too the goal is to promote blood circulation and reduce the intensity of the pain. Very interesting to massage your back before playing sports when you have low back pain.

Surgical treatments in extreme cases

More and more, surgery is becoming THE solution for everything. Contrary to what one might think, she is used as a last resort for the lower back if medical treatment has failed.

Usually, medical surgery is performed for specific actions such as a herniated disc or for disc degeneration concerns. To request it, you need a diagnosis from a health professional, or even several, to accurately assess the problems and prepare for the best possible treatment.

For the in-depth examination, a CT scan and an X-ray are the minimum before thinking of proceeding further.

These are serious operations that directly affect the spine. Before you think about it, evaluate the solutions available to you.

What are the causes of low back pain?

What are the causes of low back pain?

The cause of low back pain is muscular in most cases (a muscle that spasm after exertion, for example). But other, rarer possibilities may arise.

Muscles and ligaments

After 50 years, we tend to become very sedentary and our muscles become more weak and fragile due to not using muscles. Our ligaments and tendons then become less flexible. This is why, building muscle after 40 years is necessary to continue to operate and strengthen our muscle fibers as well as all of our body mobility!

A wrong movement, an unusually too heavy load and presto, the muscle or ligament is abrupt and pain may occur. The repetition of physical actions with a bad posture of the back can weaken it very quickly, even with strong muscles. You just have to see the movers for example.

Bone and disc joint

As we age, the body can be subject to some problems. The flexibility of the intervertebral discs is reduced over time, this is called disc degeneration. It is particularly noticeable in people over the age of 60.

A herniated disc can appear over time and become more severe if you stay too long in improper postures. The nerve roots are compressed by the gel in the discs of the vertebrae causing pain.

Bone problems like osteoarthritis and arthritis are rarer in young people and more common in older people. These can cause fractures after low back pain because the bones are less strong.

What are the factors that cause the onset of low back pain?

You may have understood, we can note 5 factors that help the onset of low back pain:

  • Aging
  • Lack of activity
  • Bad posture
  • Overweight
  • Negative emotions

I will explain them to you in a little more detail.

What are the exercises to do with low back pain?

You can do stretching exercises to loosen the lower back like in my video:

Remember to also do regular sessions for a healthy back and prevention of future ailments:

If certain exercises do you good, do not hesitate to do them and redo them, a lot of abs are recommended for the back. But to relieve yourself, you can count on back stretching!
